  • 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed and drained 14-ounce
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or agave nectar
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray

Instructions
 

  • Prepare the Tofu: After pressing your extra-firm tofu for at least 30 minutes (or ideally longer, up to 1-2 hours) to remove excess water, pat it very dry with paper towels. Cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes. The drier the tofu, the crispier it will become.
  • Season the Tofu: In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Add the cubed tofu to the bowl and gently toss to coat evenly. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the seasoned tofu and toss again until each piece is lightly coated. The cornstarch is key for creating that desirable crispy crust.
  • Preheat and Arrange: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 5 minutes. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Arrange the coated tofu cubes in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring not to overcrowd it. Cook in batches if necessary to allow proper air circulation, which is essential for crisping.
  • Air Fry to Perfection: Air fry the tofu for 18-25 minutes, shaking the basket every 5-7 minutes to ensure even cooking and browning. Continue cooking until the tofu is golden brown, firm, and wonderfully crispy on all sides. Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your air fryer model.
  • Serve Immediately: Once the Crispy Air Fryer Tofu is cooked to your desired crispiness, remove it from the air fryer and serve hot. It’s delicious on its own, as a protein boost for salads and grain bowls, or tossed into stir-fries and wraps. Garnish with sesame seeds or fresh cilantro, if desired.

Notes

  • Press Longer: The longer you press your tofu, the more moisture is removed, leading to superior crispiness. Aim for at least 30 minutes, but an hour or more is ideal.
  • Don't Overcrowd: Cooking tofu in a single layer with space between pieces is crucial for crispy results. Overcrowding leads to steaming, not frying.
  • Shake Frequently: Regularly shaking the air fryer basket ensures all sides of the tofu get exposed to the circulating hot air, promoting even browning and crispness.
  • Customize Seasoning: Feel free to experiment with different spices like chili powder, ginger, or a pinch of cayenne for a kick.
