Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1-2 teaspoons ceremonial or culinary grade matcha powder, sifted
  • 2 fluid ounces hot water, about 175°F 80°C
  • 6-8 fluid ounces milk of choice dairy, oat, almond, soy
  • 1-2 teaspoons sweetener, optional e.g., maple syrup, honey, agave, or sugar

Instructions

  • Prepare Matcha: Sift 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder into a small bowl or chawan. This step is key to preventing clumps in your Matcha Green Tea Latte. Add 2 ounces of hot water (about 175°F / 80°C). Whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk (chasen) in a 'W' or 'M' motion until a smooth, bright green liquid with a frothy top forms.
  • Heat Milk: Gently heat 6-8 ounces of your chosen milk in a saucepan over medium heat, or use a steamer. The ideal temperature for the milk in a Matcha Green Tea Latte is around 140-150°F (60-65°C), which is warm enough to be pleasant but not so hot that it scalds the milk or diminishes the matcha's delicate flavor. Froth the milk if desired.
  • Combine: Pour the whisked matcha into your serving mug. Slowly pour the frothed milk over the matcha. If you want to create latte art, hold back the foam with a spoon and then gently spoon it on top.
  • Sweeten & Serve: Add your preferred sweetener, if using, and stir gently. Enjoy your freshly made Matcha Green Tea Latte immediately.

Notes

  • Always sift your matcha powder to avoid lumps and ensure a silky smooth Matcha Green Tea Latte.
  • Use water just off the boil (around 175°F) to preserve matcha’s delicate flavor and prevent bitterness.
